After researching all mp3 players I questioned for a cowon 02 for Christmas..and that’s what I got. Several times I was queried “sure you don’t want an IPOD?” Nope I want the Cowon!
Well on Christmas, my sister got an IPOD, my niece got a Sansa and I got the Cowon. We all got them started and after a few glitches the Sansa and Ipod are downloading and working by Christmas afternoon. Here I am with my well researched “better” mp3 player and I got nothing – nothing on Christmas -nothing on Saturday – nothing on Sunday. Everybody is trying to make the Cowon download a book….we even resorted to reading the manual…no luck. We finally got music downloaded but just couldn’t load a book.
…Guess what? WMA is NOT supported on the Cowon…huh? In all the materials I read in making my choice, it says WMA is supported. NOPE its not….
Well I feel like an idiot…I’m sending it back and getting the Sansa.

I use the Cowon O2 as a replacemrnt for a CD changer in our home audio system. I rip CDs in FLAC format and use compression level 4. The connection I use is an analog audio cable. The sound is nearly identical to the sound I get when playing a CD on my blu-ray player. Fantatic sound and even with FLAC I can get about 100 CDs on the 32 GB memory card.
My set up begs the question: Why don’t audio receiver companies make an audio amplifier with memory built in to play compressed digital music? Maybe next year.

I’ve had the Q5W, A3 and Now the O2 and it’s by far my favorite. Since music is my main need, the O2 Plays my AAC music files without a problem. With the q5w I needed additional software to play my files, with the A3, it plays them just fine, but music info and album art is small, whereas on the O2 album art and music info is easily readable. My only regret is that the O2 does not have video recording like the A3, which I am using solely for recording TV shows to watch later. I also wish that SD card was really integrated into the main menory, except for those two cons, if you want to call them that, it’s perfect for me. The O2 is also smaller and lighter and simpler to carry than both Q5 and A3.

I see many people have the white one and there are 3 reviews so far for it. But the black one has no review….it’s not much of a huge deal since it’s the same player. The only advantage the black version has is that it is a small bit more understated and therefore perfect for using about without drawing too many inquiring stares. Now to the product. As has already been stated, this player lacks the wifi of the touch and archos. After going through a zen x-fi, and archos 5 and the ipod touch 2G in the past three months I have finally found the perfect player…the Cowon O2. This is perfect because I mostly watch downloaded anime and shows and read a few books as well as listen to remixes from my DJ friend and this does the job so very well. Of course it isn’t that large and slips sweetly into my pocket…really it’s size is an advantage cos it is simpler to fish out of your pocket than the touch.
Cons:
I only wish it read pdf like the archos and played mkv hi-res videos smoothly since I have many football matches I want to place on a portable player. I also wish there was an simpler way to skip track because each time I want to do that I have to use the touchscreen. Additionally I wish it was simpler to scroll down the txt files….and where’s the csd viewer? I need to read my manga! The external speaker has a very very low volume and isn’t much excellent with videos since video sounds cannot be enhanced to increase their volume.
I’ve only used this for a day but it has become such an brilliant companion to me. I would readily recommend this for anyone who is fine with not having wifi on his her portable device….as it is I have a laptop and the Cowon and between the two of them all my needs are cared for. This is a very rough and basic player but does exactly what I need so I give it a 4 star rating.
Sorry the review isn’t that excellent…this is my first review. I would be pleased to answer any questions posed in comments on my review to clarify anything I have missed.

Although it looks excellent in design and the touch screen is fantastic. It lacks using appeal. Browsing thru your files is no fun; there are no graphics, no pretty add-ins or anything. Just a steal looking folder in which you expand to view your media files. There is no FM tuner, I like talk radio in the morning on my bus ride to work. Playing your music files are no fun as well, this device does not show album art or anything while playing, best to just turn the screen off and not look at the device. Also, does not play MKV files, yes it’s supposed to, but it doesn’t. Firmware update did not fix any of this issues either. I traded in my unit and got the A3. A3 larger unit, smaller screen, but offer so much more than the O2, very appealing, even when just browsing thru media files. Still issues with MKV files, firmware update did help, but still needs improvement. Maybe one or two more updates and the MKV files should play fine.
